All About Us

MobiLink was set up to provide a solution for the implementation of driverless cars within Birmingham's transport system. We believe that we have achieved just that- a proposed system of first/ last mile transportation, realised over phases, allowing the public to develop a positive perception of driverless cars.

Why Birmingham?

Birmingham is the UKs centre for research on connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), with 50 miles of diverse roads already set aside for testing around Birmingham, Coventry and Solihull. Birmingham has recieved over £20 million from the UK government and much more from private investors, to support the research of the CAV industry. The city aims to have the first fully autonomous demand responsive transport service in the UK in-place before the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

In addition, Birmingham has been selected as the first area in the UK to benefit from the rollout of 5G. 5G comes with the promise of a large bandwidth, good coverage, reliability and security and will be able to cope with a level of connections required by a smart city that 4G has been unable to satisfy. In order for CAVs to operate safely and reliably, access to 5G is incredibly important, so it makes sense for the leading area in 5G to lead in the advancement of CAV technology.
